What to Expect at Your First Lymphatic Drainage Session After Surgery

September 15, 2026•3 min read

Before I book a single first post-operative appointment, I go through your surgeon's clearance and aftercare notes in detail — that's how every session at Ella Beauty Studio starts, not with the massage table. Here's exactly what happens from there.

Before anything else: your surgeon's clearance

I confirm you have your surgeon's go-ahead to start treatment before the appointment is booked — I won't guess at timing on your behalf, because that call belongs to the person who operated on you. Bring any aftercare notes or instructions your surgeon gave you; they shape how the session is run.

The health questionnaire, and how it's different for post-op clients

Every first appointment opens with a health questionnaire, but the post-op version goes further than the standard one: your procedure, the surgery date, any areas your surgeon has flagged as sensitive or off-limits for now, medication that affects circulation, and whether you've had any complications since surgery. None of that becomes a diagnosis — it's used only to decide where and how gently I work that day, strictly inside what your surgeon has already authorised.

What the technique actually involves

Manual lymphatic drainage is a light, rhythmic hand technique — nothing like a deep-tissue massage. I trained specifically in pre and post-surgical lymphatic drainage as part of my ABT-accredited certification (Associated Beauty Therapists, London, 2026), covering the anatomy of the lymphatic system and how to work safely around different types of cosmetic surgery. The pressure is deliberately gentle in this context, following your surgeon's aftercare plan rather than a generic massage routine.

Every session follows the same written plan

I work strictly to the plan your surgeon has set out — the same areas, the same approach, session after session — and any question that falls outside what a beauty therapist should answer gets redirected straight back to your surgeon's team, no exceptions. Between appointments, I confirm the next one against that same plan rather than adjusting anything based on my own judgement.

Getting positioned on the table

Depending on your procedure, lying flat isn't always comfortable in the early weeks, so I adjust the table and use pillows or bolsters to support whatever position your surgeon's aftercare instructions allow — reclined rather than fully flat, or with knees supported, for example. Say something as soon as a position feels wrong; the session pauses and resets rather than continuing through discomfort. If you're wearing a compression garment your surgeon has prescribed, wear it to the session — I work around it rather than asking you to remove it unless your surgeon's notes say otherwise.

The setting itself

The studio is a small, one-to-one treatment room inside Beauty Desire on Stockwell Green — not a busy salon floor, which matters when you're a few weeks out from surgery and not looking for a crowded waiting area. I work in English or Portuguese, whichever puts you more at ease for the conversation part of the appointment.

After the session

You can expect the same gentle, rhythmic approach each time you come back — this isn't a treatment that gets more intense over time, it follows the same plan your surgeon has set out for your sessions. Sessions run 60 minutes at £80, with introductory packages available (5 for £275, 10 for £500) if your surgeon's plan involves an ongoing course.

Full details on the protocol, pricing and how sessions are structured are on the Pre & Post-Operative Lymphatic Drainage page. If it's been a while since your surgery and you're now looking for a general wellness routine instead, see Manual Lymphatic Drainage for Wellness.

What to wear and bring

Loose, comfortable clothing you can easily adjust for the treatment area is enough — there's no special preparation required beyond your surgeon's own aftercare instructions and any compression garments they've asked you to keep wearing. If you're unsure what to bring, the studio's Instagram, @ellastudiobeautyuk, shows the treatment room itself, which can help set expectations before you arrive.

To book your first appointment, message WhatsApp 07889 809678 with your surgeon's clearance details, or use the bookings page — Wednesday 11am–7pm, Sunday 11am–4pm, Stockwell Green SW9 9JF.
