What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage? A Therapist's Explanation
I explain this treatment to someone new almost every week, usually because they've heard the name but not what it actually involves. Here's how I describe it in the room, without the textbook language.

It's a technique, not a type of massage
The most common reaction I get in a first session is "is that it?" — the pressure is so light compared to a regular massage that a few clients initially wonder if I'm doing anything at all. It's a completely different technique from Swedish or deep tissue, using slow, rhythmic, very light strokes by hand — no machines or devices — designed to encourage fluid movement just beneath the skin rather than working into muscle. Knowing that going in means it doesn't feel like I'm "doing it wrong" once you're on the table.
Two reasons people book it
I see it booked for two quite different reasons: as part of a post-surgical protocol prescribed by a surgeon, and as a standalone wellness session for fluid retention, heavy legs, or as a regular addition to a self-care routine. The technique itself doesn't change between the two — what changes is whether there's a surgeon's plan behind it. The post-op protocol and the wellness version are separate pages because the context around each is genuinely different.
What a session actually feels like
Most people expect it to feel like nothing, given how light the pressure is — instead, most describe it as unexpectedly relaxing, even sleep-inducing. You're covered throughout except for the area being worked, and every session, wellness or post-op, opens with a short health questionnaire before we start.
How a session is structured
A wellness session runs the full 60 minutes, moving systematically through the areas we've agreed on rather than spending the whole hour on one spot — legs and feet for someone who's been travelling, for example, or a fuller sequence for general retention. Post-op sessions follow the same hour but are shaped entirely by what your surgeon has authorised for that stage, which is covered in more detail on the protocol page.
What it isn't
I won't tell you this treatment melts fat, reduces measurements, or fixes a medical condition — that's not what the technique does, and any claim like that isn't one I'll make. What I can say is what the session involves and how people generally describe the experience, not a guaranteed physical result.
My training, and how I actually apply it
I trained in manual lymphatic drainage covering the anatomy of the lymphatic system and the specific considerations for pre and post-surgical care (Associated Beauty Therapists, London, 2026). How that training gets applied varies by therapist — some run a fixed sequence regardless of how the area responds; I lean towards following what I actually feel under my hands that day and adjusting the sequence area by area, rather than working the same routine on autopilot.
